There are two basic types of baby monitors. Analog and digital, and they have their merits and demerits. Many parents do trial and error to determine the best baby monitor to buy. Analog baby monitors are inexpensive and are widely available. They usually use the 49mHz or 900mHz frequency and function a lot like radio channels and thus are very susceptible to noise and interference from other gadgets in the house because there are many other electronic gadgets that share these frequencies. The baby monitors therefore mostly come with channel options that allow the parent to tune to those that have minimal interference from other household gadgets. Some of them use the 2.4GHz frequency and are therefore less susceptible to interference. There is also the possibility for the frequencies to interfere with each other and thus leading to your neighbors hearing noises from your baby’s monitor.

Digital baby monitors on the other hand tend to be a little more costly than the analog ones. Digital types also operate on a frequency most commonly the 2.4GHz although this is rarely listed or displayed on their packages but the advantage of the digital baby monitor is that the signal is encrypted and thus protects the transmissions from eavesdropping s and thus reduces the chances of interference. However, many digital baby monitors interfere with wireless routers and many parents have also reported that they cause noise in their cordless phones whenever the two are used simultaneously.
Advances in baby monitor technology

In recent times, there have been many advances in this technology as many companies have sought to come up with a way to ensure that there is a secure connection between the parent and the baby through the baby monitors. In many of the gadgets being produced, it is possible for the parent to adjust the sensitivity of the channel and thus ensuring that there is no disruption. For example, if you need interference-free between you and your child, you could get a high end sophisticated baby monitor that allows you to even roam about 100 feet away from your baby when the batteries have been charged.
They have also come up with the talk back feature that allows the parent to talk to their child in another room. The safety feature in the baby monitors have also been emphasized in the current versions. The number of channels available in the baby monitors has been greatly increased and thus increasing the level of security in the connections.
